I agree with you, the 16 CSI Divisions are still the standard, in our area anyway, we are familiar with it and all it's inadequacies, and I sure don't like the complexity of the new format. Of course, that's the main reason they're asking for it in the first place, so it just confuses things. I think most of the time the architects ask for a breakdown without really understanding what they're asking for, and the result is a hodge-podge of numbers that make apples-to-apples comparison of pricing impossible.
The only caulking/sealants that would be broken out would be if there was a separate caulking/waterproofing sub who was providing sealants between dissimilar materials. Using your examples, the HVAC and plumbing boots would be included in the HVAC and plumbing breakdowns, and the caulk for the painter would be in the painting numbers. provisions of "other" specs with the main trade that is using them. MilburnYou're absolutely right, and it's the same issue even in commercial. It will be a problem to get true cost for all the CSI division no matter which one you use, at least that is the way it is out here! The painter uses caulks and sealants but doesn't break out the cost, the framer installs flashing with the windows and the HVAC man makes the flashings for the roofer to install.
On residential construction it is going to be hard to get a breakdown of costs into CSI divisions because of the overlap of items with the trades.
